Way back when, like in ancient history, (knights of yore and all that), the Groom and his Bridesmen or Bridesknights (later Known as The Best Man) would actually kidnap the bride-to-be from another tribe ad spirit her away to the Groom's castle (they didn't have condos back then!) and keep her under lock and key until she was subdued, and pregnant. That's actually where the custom of carrying the bride over the threshold came from! After a successful capture, the Groom and his fellow conspirators (Best Man) would then fight off the bride's family  with swords held in their right hands and the bride held by the Groom's left hand, which is why the Groom stands on the right at a modern-day ceremony  it's supposed to leave his sword arm free to fight off the hordes of pissed-off relatives! You can see that some of the qualities that a Groom would look for in a Best Man would be someone that was strong and tough and a good swordsman, and trustworthy as well, because part of his duties after the kidnapping were to make sure the bride didn't escape. Obviously, in today's world, the Best Man won't be expected to kidnap the bride and engage in sword fighting, but as Best Man you do have a laundry-list of things you're supposed to be responsible for. (Hopefully, dealing with outraged relatives won't be one of them!)
