"Best Man Etiquette"
Who Says What About Who (or Whom)?

Dear Mr. Best Man,

Believe it or not, there is an etiquette to speeches given at weddings - from who says what about who, to the order of the speakers.

Mr. Best Man...Now that you've committed yourself to participating in this insanity, and pasted that phony I'm-so-excited-and-honored-that-you-asked-me-to-give-the-speech-at-your-wedding smile on your face, you'll need to figure out just what you want to say, how to say it and how not to make a complete and total ass out of yourself in front of all the wedding guests, right?

That's where we come in!

First off, as the Best Man you need to know a few of the basics, like who says what about who (or whom). And what NOT to say! And how to appear as the self-confident Best Man and in control of yourself when all you really want to do it pee your pants!

Ready?

Dear Mr. Best Man,

1. The Best Man toasts the Bride and Groom - the Best Man speech is supposed to be a toast to the Bride and Groom and their new life together.

Without a doubt, the Best Man speech is the most important of all the speeches, for a couple of reasons. It's typically the first speech, so you get to warm the crowd up and wow them with your brilliance, your wit, your wisdom and your ability to articulate your views. Oh, no pressure there!

A good Best Man's speech should include a little story about how the Bride and Groom met (either funny or touching), and if possible, a funny or even embarrassing story involving the Groom and the Best Man - but here's where you need to be careful to adjust the content to your audience. You'll probably have grandmas and kids listening, so keep it at least semi-clean. No references to that incident with the Girls Gone Wild crew while you were on spring break, and any references to past relationships the Groom might have had will get you shot by the bride, so don't even go down that road! Especially if she's 1) armed and 2) has a temper!

2. The Groom is next - he gives thanks the Bride's parents (especially if they paid for the wedding!), then thanks his Best Man , the Bridesmaids, and then toasts his Bride.
