"The Best Man Check List"

Dear, Mr. Best Man

Here’s your checklist of all the things a modern-day Best Man is supposed to do:

  • As The Best Man -Your most important job is to keep the Groom’s head screwed on straight – take care of all the details and keep him organized.

  • The Best Man is expected to- Arrange for the bachelor party

  • The Best Man should help gather size information on the attendants or ushers

  • The Best Man will help pick out the tuxes

  • The Best Man makes sure the male attendants, (ushers or groomsmen) know where to go for tux fittings, what their duties are, etc.

  • The Best Man plans the bachelor’s dinner, if there is one

  • The Best Man makes sure the groom has all the accessories for his outfit

  • The Best Man keeps track of the usher’s gifts

  • The Best Man makes sure the boutonnières are ordered and delivered on time.

  • The Best Man gets all the ushers together for the wedding rehearsal

  • The Best Man makes coordinates with the bride’s mother the order of cars taking everyone to the rehearsal and the church or wedding location

  • The Best Man assists the groom get dressed (yes, we know he’s old enough to dress himself, but he’ll be nervous. If his fly is open, it’ll be your fault!)

  • The Best Man makes sure the groom has the marriage license in his pocket.

  • YOU KEEP TRACK OF THE RING!

  • The Best Man witnesses the wedding certificate after the ceremony.

  • The Best Man finds out from the groom what he wants to tip the clergy, organist, limo driver, and anyone else, get the money from him, and keep it in separate envelopes (labeled) in your pocket.

  • The Best Man makes sure the ushers are at the church at least an hour before the ceremony

  • The Best Man talks to the photographer and find out when the formal pictures are being taken (usually before the ceremony) and round up all the important players

  • The Best Man makes sure everyone that has a cell phone turns it off prior to the ceremony.

  • The Best Man makes maps of how to get to the church or wedding location, and keep a list of phone numbers of all participants and everyone else involved (caterers, florists, etc.)

  • The Best Man makes sure the groom is at the church or wedding location at least ½ hour before the ceremony.

  • The Best Man makes will immediately after the ceremony escort the Maid or Matron of Honor out of the church

  • The Best Man hurries to the reception location (you may be asked to drive some members of the wedding party to the reception).

  • The Best Man makes sure, if the bride and groom are leaving for the honeymoon immediately after the reception, take charge of their luggage and make sure it isn’t accessible to the practical jokers in the wedding party.

  • The Best Man keeps control of the car keys, travel arrangements, tickets, etc. and turn them all over to the groom once he’s changed into travel clothes.

  • If you’ve arranged for flowers, wine or a gift basket for the honeymoon suite, make sure it’s been delivered.

  • At the reception, the Best Man reads any letters, telegrams, faxes and emails from friends and family that couldn’t attend in person.

  • GIVE THE BEST MAN SPEECH

  • The Best Man makes dances with the Bridge, both mothers and as many of the bridal party as you can.

  • The Best Man makes arrangements for the tossing of the garter

  • The Best Man mingles with the guests.
